Social Media Tools for Work & Self Promotion

Task 1.

Firstly, here are 5 social media tools.

  1. 1.  LinkedIn.  LinkedIn is the largest professional network. LinkedIn will show your skills, educational background etc. And all of these maybe can grip potential employers’ attention. Professionals use Linkedin in order to connect with each other with regards to career opportunities and business potentials (Jarfferall, 2012)
    2.  Facebook. Facebook is largest network with vast active    members, although not all of users are professionals. We still cannot ignore Facebook, because your potential employer would to check that out. For some reasons, Facebook reflect more realities about your personal life.

    1. 3.    Twitter.  Twitter is an online social networking service that      allows its users to send and read posts of up to 140 characters, known as “tweets”. Professionals use Twitter to exchange their views online and share their opinions. They also follow other Twitter feeds to enhance their own career and gain valuable information in real time to keep themselves up to date (Jarfferall, 2012).
    2. 4.    Industry social networks. The industry social networks comprise of companies seeking to analyze, or display social connections of friends, potential applicants, and competitors. The networks can be used for business purposes as well as future job opportunities. A user may use these tools to find contacts, job opportunities and information about their particular profession (Jarfferall, 2012).
    3. 5.    Blogs. A blog or an RSS feed is a website consisting of entries that a professional has subscribed to follow. The blog or feed source is being regularly updated with new sources and more information that both the professional as well as businesses use to promote themselves. A blog can also be very useful with regards to education and training (Jarfferall, 2012).

Social media has become a very powerful tool for businesses as well as professionals. They use these tools in order to easily expose their capabilities and market themselves to the business world. By using these tools professionals can share their knowledge and experience to help market themselves in the process of building their career aspirations. Businesses use the social media tools in order to promote their products and services and to acquire the best fit candidate for their organization.

“A social networking service is an online service, platform, or site that focuses on building and reflecting of social networks or social relations among people, who, for example, share interests and/or activities. A social network service consists of a representation of each user (often a profile), his/her social links, and a variety of additional services. Most social network services are web-based and provide means for users to interact over the Internet, such as e-mail and instant messaging.” (CC-BY Dictionary)

Social media tools enable a professional to have a profile which describes their unique talents and strengths that they can bring to an organization. A personal, professional brand image is achieved through the detailed profile of the individual posted to the social network. “Professional branding is important for anyone who is job searching or building their career. It’s important to create a personal brand that portrays you in a professional light and which provides employers and contacts with a strong positive impression of you as a high-caliber individual who would be an asset to their organization.” (Doyle, 2011)

 Job recruiters use social media tools to select the best candidate who would fit their organization based upon their online profile. According to online reputation manager Reppler, “91% of recruiters screen applicants via social networks.” (Cohen, 2011)  Businesses are also using social media tools to promote their products and services to their customers which help make them more aware of what the company has to offer.
